by Performance Car Insurance on July 21st, 2010

The Rise of Muscle Horsepower

At the beginning of the 1960’s and lasting until the mid Seventies, a unique type of American motor car appeared on the roads, and almost instantly became extremely sought after and a classic, particularly with sports car enthusiasts, before suddenly disappearing completely due to a lack of demand.

These cars were widely known throughout the world as ‘Muscle Cars’.

Muscle Cars were called this due to their extremely large and powerful V8 or V12 cylinder engines and exceedingly fast acceleration. Most of us have seen the movies featuring Muscle cars racing for ‘pink slips’!

The majority of these muscle cars were built with V8 engines generating over 300 to 400 bhp and consequently were without doubt extremely costly to repair .

Muscle cars were built with high performance engine parts such as specialist valves , cams , intake manifolds advanced carburettors and free flowing exhausts that helped to generateextra engine power and consequently – higher car insurance premiums

US performance cars prior to 1960 were commonly the bulky and cumbersome top of the range autos fitted with the marques most advanced engines .
The exclusion to the rule was the Chevrolet Corvette , first built in 1953, it was America’s first super sports car as such.

In 1962 the Chevrolet Corvette had been upgraded with a V8 engine throwing out 327 hp and became the first of the breed of two seater American Muscle cars , replacing the much heavier models .

With the success of muscle that the Ford Mustang created in 1964 other manufacturers and car builders were quick to follow and hence a lot of the sports car market being dominated by small vehicles fitted with big V8 engines which were called ‘Pony Cars’, although many of the older classics such as the Ford Thunderbird were upgraded with larger V12 motors .

The Muscle car period ended and the last Muscle Car manufactured in the mid seventies with the Global oil crisis and petrol rationing. This was one step too far for the public , which coupled with the high cost of car insurance and stringent new exhaust emission controls , led to a lack of demand for large engined motors and the Muscle Car passed into history as some of the greatest American Classic Cars ever made. Sadly demand was never again rekindled.
